Hand-Drawn Greeting Cards
I used to work at a pet store in my hometown. I’ve always loved animals, and I figured I should combine two things that I love more than anything. Animals and cartoons. Whenever anyone came to the till I was working at, I would have a quick, casual conversation with them, and at the end of the purchase, I would ask them what their favourite animal was or if they could have a pet- anything- what would it be? I would then doodle a quick 5 or 10 second cartoon of their animal on the back of their receipt. I drew cats, dogs, birds, fish, hamsters, monkeys, giraffes, elephants, snakes, fish, hedgehogs, dinosaurs, and a zillion other animals on the back of a zillion receipts. It was fun, and people really enjoyed it.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I was sharing a table with some cartoonist pals at the YEG CatFest. What could I offer a few thousand feline enthusiasts? Cartoons on greeting cards! Each individual greeting card is hand-drawn, Brush and ink on card stock, sometimes with an ink wash. They proved to be popular, so I started offering them to a bunch of local shops, and they continue to gain a following.
I also started to customize greeting cards, featuring people’s pets. I do these at live events.
I have drawn hundreds of designs in the past couple of months. Mostly from my head, some customized for customers.
Custom Comic Strips!
I have been trying to come up with things I might be able to offer people that are different and could focus on my strengths as a cartoonist. I have started to create custom digital comic strips for people. Focusing, once again, on pets. This too has become a popular venture. The result is a full-colour, hi-res custom comic strip in a couple of formats, suitable for framing.
